Mural Courses & Certificate Program                                         Online Certificate Now Available!

A mural is a work of art created for a particular site and incorporated into the existing architecture. Murals can be found everywhere, enhancing the interiors and exteriors of homes, buildings, and offices. A recent revival of mural painting is not surprising - we live in a time where the decoration of homes and workplaces has become one of the most accessible ways of expressing a person’s individuality.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design receives numerous requests to help with the execution of murals. These requests come from a variety of sources ranging from individuals who want murals for their homes to community organizations
wishing to beautify their neighborhoods. The college can usually recommend only a handful of local muralists. These artists are certainly not enough to handle the number of requests received.

There are numerous painters in the area who could do mural work if they were experienced, encouraged, and networked. Through this series of courses, artists learn about the basic materials and techniques used to create large-scale interior and exterior paintings for any purpose. Artists also learn how to manage and coordinate a community mural project. Topics students learn about include:

• image development
• surface preparation
• image enlargement
• selecting paint and materials
• organizing a community-based mural project
