Pennsylvania College of Art & Design offers modern facilities to our students. The college is located at 204/202 North Prince Street, a five-story air conditioned building with 62,000 square feet of well-maintained work and study space. Studios
The 25 studios are designed to allow abundant natural light to shine through
the many windows.
Photography Lab
The college’s three darkrooms are
equipped with black & white and
color enlargers, two color processors,
an archival print washer, and
developing sinks. A film processing
lab and photography studio
are also available for student use.
In addition, students can utilize
the computer imaging labs, which
house equipment for digital imaging,
and the non-silver area of the
printmaking studio.Computer Imaging Labs
The college houses two spacious
and well-equipped computer labs,
each one featuring 17 Macintosh
workstations, with DVD-RWs.
Both fully-networked labs contain
a laser printer, a photo-quality
color printer, scanners, and wireless
access to the network.
Students have access to the server
to store their files, and all workstations
have Internet access.
Software includes everything necessary
to teach courses in graphic
design, fine arts, photography, and
Web design. In addition to these
two labs, there are six classrooms
specifically designed for wireless
laptop access to the network.
Students can also access all computer
resources from their laptops
using the college’s wireless connection
to the network.
Printmaking Lab The college’s printmaking lab is
equipped for monoprint, relief,
and intaglio printmaking.
Available presses include a handmade
French Tool intaglio press.
Stainless steel work tables, numerous
flat files, print drying racks,
and a Nu Arc Exposure System
(for burning plates) make for a
highly functional studio space.
The print lab is also equipped
with vertical etching tanks and a
Macintosh workstation. An air
exchange system and low toxin
etching fluids are in constant use.
Woodshop
The woodshop houses numerous
tools, including saws, drills and
sanders, which are available for
students to use only with faculty
supervision. Library
The library offers students a
diverse collection of print and
non-print resources. The print
collection includes more than
10,000 books and the library subscribes
to over 80 periodicals. In
addition, the students have access
to a 25,000 plus slide collection
and over 12,000 electronic books,
electronic reserves, and the following
electronic databases: AccuNet
/Associated Press Multimedia
Archive, ARTstor, LexisNexis
Academic, Art Museum Image
Gallery and Wilson Biographies
Plus Illustration. Students may
also utilize the web-based library
catalog and the Internet.
The library is a participating
member of Access PA, a project of
the Department of Education and
the Office of Commonwealth
Libraries, which provides interlibrary
loan services from participating
academic, public, special
and school libraries throughout
Pennsylvania.
The college’s students also have
a reciprocal borrowing agreement
with the library at nearby Franklin
& Marshall College.

The Main Gallery exhibits works
of nationally and regionally known
artists and designers. The student
gallery area on the third floor regularly
features student art work
which has been selected by departmental
faculty. Extensive exhibition
space on each floor consistently
showcases student work from current
class assignments. Student Lounge
The college maintains student
lounge areas in the Atrium and on
the second and third floors. The
third floor student lounge area
contains vending machines, a
microwave, a refrigerator, and
dish washing facilities. Both here and
the Atrium are where students
meet regularly to eat, relax, and
talk with friends. A series of bulletin
boards, located on the third
floor, display a variety of news
including exhibition opportunities,
educational and travel information,
apartment listings, job and volunteer opportunities, community events, PCA&D sponsored events, and
items for sale. |
